Good for Walmart, bad for Ashlee Simpson
Ashlee Simpson signs her new catchy single "Outta My Head" at Walmart on Route 110 in Farmingdale this Monday night at 7. (She might be late though, seeing how she's got a spot on MTV's TRL at 3:30 and there might be a bit of rush-hour traffic on the L.I.E.)
Hello, career boost! What happened, G&G, Jean Country and Rave didn't return phone calls?
Who in her management group said, "Hey, Ashlee, Walmart called. They want to do a national in-store promotion with you?"
In other parts of the country, going to Walmart is considered a good night out. Here in the Northeast -- Long Island, to be precise -- it's a place to get in and out quickly while saving a few bucks.
Have all the record stores really gone away now? Surely there's still an HMV, a Coconuts, an FYE or a Virgin Megastore somewhere to host these events now. Walmart can't possibly be the savior of music promotion, can it?
No doubt the store will be packed for this event. And for all you Ashlee Simpson fans, she'll be in New York all week, including Mirage in Westbury on Friday night.
But in a few weeks or months, there's a very good chance someone at her record label will have to pick the pieces, pieces, pieces of her music career after this promotional tour.

it's not like her career is white hot is it? a big chain like Wal-Mart has a lot of distribution power and advertising power. I'm guessing her fans are mostly young women and girls who aren't too snobby , so sounds like a good match to me, especially if the price is right.
I AM SOOOO UPSET WITH THE PERSON WHO WROTE THIS ARTICLE. I AM NOT ASHLEE SIMPSONS BIGGEST FAN BUT I DO LIKE HER, BUT I BROUGHT MY 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER TO SEE HER BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER LOVES MUSIC AND THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE A GREAT MEMORY FOR MY DAUGHTER. WALMART MAY SEEM PRETTY WEIRD TO SOME PEOPLE, BUT I COMPLETELY AGREE AND UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE DID. I BELIEVE SHE IS THE KIND OF PERSON THAT WANTS TO BE ABLE TO MEET WITH HER FANS, AND BE ABLE TO GET TO MEET WITH EVERYONE, AND LEAVE NO ONE DISAPPOINTED. NOT SO MANY PEOPLE GO TO WALMART, SO THERE WOULDN'T BE SO MANY PEOPLE WHO WOULD KNOW ABOUT IT. YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS AT A MUSIC STORE AND YOU GET 3000 PEOPLE RATHER THAN 500 AND THATS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BECAUSE THERES NO WAY ANYONE IS GONNA GET TO THAT MANY PEOPLE. HER LIFE IS PROBABLY SO CRAZY AND BUSY, PEOPLE SHOULD BE LUCKY THAT SHE HAD THE TIME AND CONSIDERATION TO VISIT JUST AN ORDINARY WALMART. TO BE TRUTHFULL HONEST, MOST PEOPLE GO TO PLACES LIKE WALMART FOR MOVIES AND CD'S CAUSE THERE HALF THE PRICE THAN A COCONUTS OR AN FYE MUSIC STORE. A CD IN FYE WOULD BE $24 AND IN WALMART FOR THE EXACT SAME ONE IT WOULD BE $15. I DON'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR HER JUST AFTER SEEING HER LAST NIGHT. SHE WAS SOOOOO NICE, AND EVEN TOOK A PICTURE WITH MY 4 YR OLD DAUGHTER. MOST PEOPLE DON'T EVEN HAVE TIME FOR ANY PICTURES. DOING IT AT A PLACE LIKE WALMART THAT WOULD NOT HAVE ATTRACTED AS MANY PEOPLE AS AN FYE MAKE IT MORE PERSONALIZED, NOT AS MANY PEOPLE, SO SHE CAN SPEND THAT EXTRA 2 SECONDS PER PERSON TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH THEM. ANY WAY. DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE COULD SAY HER CAREER IS NOT THAT GOOD TO SHOW UP AT A WALMART. ACTUALLY I THINK IT MAKES HER CAREER EVEN BETTER, BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO GO TO A MORE POPULAR PLACE TO ATTRACT MORE PEOPLE. SHE IS ALREADY SUCCESSFUL AND THE REASON WHY SHE CAN GO TO JUST A WALMART. SHE HAS ENOUGH PUBLICITY AS IT IS. THIS WAS SIMPLY JUST A WAY TO MEET WITH HER FANS. AND LIKE THE PERSON ABOVE ME COMMENTED,
THE NOT SO STUCK UP RICH PEOPLE WHO SHOP EVERYWHERE ELSE STILL HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET HER. SO SHES SENDING A GOOD MESSAGE OUT TO LESS FORTUNATE PEOPLE LIKE MYSELF WHO SPEND MY MONEY WISELY.
