Taxes are a top concern of small businesses on Long Island. And that sentiment was evident today when Gov. Eliot Spitzer addressed a meeting of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce in East Meadow.
After the governor ticked off the benefits of a revamped worker’s comp program, including $1.15 billion in savings to businesses statewide, no applause followed at the meeting held at the Bristal Assisted Living. And when the governor took a few questions, the first one was whether it was true he was planning to raise the gasoline tax. “No,” he said.
For Marlena Schein, a broker associate in at Coldwell Banker Mannor Gate in Wantagh, taxes certainly take center stage and nothing she heard, even about a state commission to look into Long Island property taxes, brought her any solace for the short term.
“We all know what’s going to happen,” she said. “We know the taxes are coming."
