EEOC Finding Foreshawdowed Verdict Against Knicks

Maybe Cablevision should have listened to the EEOC.


The agency, which is charged with enforcing workplace rights, found “probable cause” more than a year ago that New York Knicks Coach Isiah Thomas sexully harassed former Knicks senior vice president Anucha Browne Sanders.


The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, as the agency is formally known, also found that Cablevision, which owns the Knicks, retailiated by firing Brown Sanders after she filed a complaint with the EEOC.


In its finding dated Sept. 15, 2006, the agency stated, “There is evidence that the charging party was subjected to a hostile work environment, including but not limited to severe and pervasive verbal sexual harassment.”


The commission tried to mediate a settlement. But its efforts were unsuccesful. And Cablevision decided to duke it out in court. That decision proved costly. A federal jury today agreed to award the plaintiff $11.6 million. The judge in the case will determine the final amount.
