The Girl Scouts of Nassau County Inc. has been named to AARP's list of the 50 best companies for employees over the age of 50. The group ranked No. 50 on the list.
AARP cited such things as recruiting practices, training and development, health benefits and pension plans and alternative work arrangements.
The Girl Scouts of Nassau County employs 54 people and more than 70 percent are over 50, says Susan Caruso, the group's director of human resources.
Among the alternative work arrangements, the nonprofit allows employees to use paid sick days to take care of ailing family members and to telecommute and work compressed work weeks, just the kind of flexibility that surveys show older workers, in particular, want.
As part of the qualification process, AARP sought surveys from the employees, unlike many similar surveys that use an honor system for companies.
"I feel that the important thing is not just what we said on the application but the fact that our employees corroborated what we said," Caruso said.
